Wolverhampton Wanderers netted in the dying stages of the second half to earn themselves a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on Monday evening.


The Magpies were eager for a return to winning ways in order to move clear of the drop zone, while Wolves were looking to consolidate seventh spot.


The home side enjoyed a lot of the ball early on, but they were let down by their finish, with Raul Jimenez firing over from 10-yards out after 18 minutes.


Jimenez was a real menace for the Wolves attack throughout the half and he almost broke the deadlock on 36 minutes but Matt Dubravka was on hand to keep out the striker’s close-range effort.


Newcastle sat deep for most of the half, but they nearly took the lead on the stroke of halftime when Salomon Rondon in the box before seeing his strike sail inches over the crossbar.


Ten minutes into the second half, Newcastle gave the away fans something to cheer about when Isaac Hayden fired past Rui Patricio from a tight angle.


Wolves coach Nuno Espírito Santo opted for a double change after 68 minutes, throwing on Helder Costa and Ivan Cavaleiro replaced Diogo Jota while Newcastle handed a debut to club-record signing Miguel Almirón.


The hosts should have restored parity in the 82nd minute when Adama Traore’s wayward shot fell into the the path of Jimenez, who could not steer his header on target from close-range.


Wolves threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser and they were rewarded in the fourth minute of time added on, with defender Wily Boly nodding home from three-yards out.
