The Parisians were happy to have Roger Federer back at Roland Garros, and the former champion responded in kind. In his first match on the terre battue since 2015, Federer raced a 4-0 lead over his overmatched opponent, Lorenzo Sonego, and never looked back, completing a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 victory in a tidy one hour and 41 minutes.
In the three clay-court tournaments he’s played this season, Federer has won each of his openers in straight sets. He’ll face qualifier Oscar Otte in the second round.
More to come on Roger’s return to Roland Garros from Steve Tignor later in the day.
