Gael Monfils stuns tennis world with extraordinary winner

Gael Monfils has done it again.

The Frenchman has sent the tennis world into meltdown with a truly ridiculous shot in Halle.

Playing against compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Monfils pulled off an extraordinary behind-the-back winner that left his opponent stunned.

Forced to track back after Herbert lobbed him, Monfils waited for the ball to come down from its peak before producing a cheeky flick around his legs with his back to the court.

Herbert could only watch in awe as the ball sailed past him for a winner, while the crowd erupted with delight.

“This is extraordinary, it really is,” one commentator said.

Fans couldn’t believe what they’d seen.

Not all good news

Unfortunately for Monfils he lost 7-6(6) 6-4.

Meanwhile, World No.5 Alexander Zverev breezed into the second round with a 6-4 7-5 victory over Dutchman Robin Hasse.

Zverev struggled on serve at times and finished with seven double faults but he fired 12 aces and converted four break points to advance after an hour and 45 minutes.

Russian third seed Karen Khachanov also progressed by winning 7-6(5) 6-4 against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic — a late replacement for Damir Dzumhur who withdrew from the tournament.

Top seed Roger Federer is in action on Tuesday against John Millman, who beat the Swiss at the US Open last year.
