What does Alonso think of the current F1 product?

Fernando Alonso claims he still watches as many Formula 1 races as he can, but admits to being bored at some of the action in the 2019 season, likening some GPs to a 0-0 stalemate between Barcelona and Real Madrid in football.

After the 2018 F1 season, Alonso departed the sport after 17 years. His two world championship wins came over a decade ago, and in more recent years he had been languishing in the midfield battle with McLaren, who were unable to compete with the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull.

This past weekend, he found more success away from F1 as he fortuitously won 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota Gazoo Racing after the team in front lost their lead due to tyre puncture issues.

He has been continuously linked with a move back to F1, however, and has previously said he would go back if he wanted to.

With regards to the 2019 season, the Spaniard has confessed to not being entertained by some of the action.

“I follow everything I can,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“I missed three of the seven races live because I was racing, but I try to watch the race later and like all the fans, sometimes it’s fun and in others I am bored.

“But I think this happens in every sport.

“Sometimes you watch Barcelona vs Real Madrid to see a good match, and sometimes it’s 0-0 and at other times it’s 5-5.

“Every sport has its good and bad Sundays, and in F1 it’s the same.”

Alonso’s former team, McLaren, are currently fourth in the constructors’ championship.
